Coastal Bay Girls Softball - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
(formerly La Jolla Girls Youth Softball)
Q. Why the name change?
A. We merged with Mission Bay Girls Softball League. Both of our leagues will benefit in many ways: increased total players, additional fields, more volunteers, larger geographical area... and, the excitement of a newer and larger league!!
Q. Who can play?
A. Any girls ages 5-14 in the surrounding community.
Q. How much will it cost?
A. Player fees are currently $175 for all ages.
Q. What will my daughter receive?
A. Uniform top, hat or visor, team socks, photo package, and trophy or medal. ASA umpires will officiate games, fields are kept in great condition, game balls and practice equipment is provided. All CBGSL coaches strive to provide a fun, instructional, positive and nurturing experience for all players.
Q. How do I register my daughter?
A. Register Online through our website. Or, you may attend one of our Walk-up Registration events in November or December. (online is preferred method).
Q. GAMES: How many, when, where?
A. 8U-14U age divisions have 2 games per week: one weekday game and one Saturday game. 6U division (tee-ball) typically has one Saturday game per week, and sometimes a weekday game. “Home” games are played at La Jolla Elementary School and McEvoy Field next to Mission Bay High School. “Away” games are played at various fields: Clairemont, Mira Mesa, Coronado, Tierra Canyon, University City, etc.
Q. PRACTICES: How many, how long, and where?
A. One practice per week: one hour for 6U and 1.5 hours for 8U-14U. Practice fields are located throughout La Jolla and Pacific Beach.
Q. PLAYER ASSESSMENTS: When, where and what is it?
A. In late-January, check this website for dates. This is not a tryout, since no experience is necessary. This is a simple assessment of the skill level of the players in order to help spread the talent and create fairly even skill-level teams in each division.
Q. My daughter has never played before...
A. No experience is necessary. Teams will be divided as evenly as possible, to ensure each team has some experienced players. Be sure she has her own glove at each practice.
Q. How are teams divided & assigned?
A. In 6U, we aim to accommodate as many friend and schoolmate requests as possible; no assessments. For 8U and older, teams are divided for similar skill levels (based on player assessments) while trying to accommodate player requests. Based on data from player assessments, the coaches and division directors meet and conduct a draft to create similar skill-level teams. Players are then “traded” to try and accommodate as many player requests as possible while maintaining balanced teams.
Q. When will I find out my team, coach and practice day?
A. Teams will be announced by the first week of February.
Q. What if I change my mind?
A. Registration fees can be refunded in full up until January 15th. After this date there will be cancellation fees. After Player Assessments, it is a $50 fee.
Q. Why are there ads on our website?
A. We use Clubspaces.com to host our website, which is a free service as long as we permit the advertisements. Only age-appropriate and youth/sports-relevant ads are permitted. We appreciate their support of Clubspaces.com, so that we may have free website hosting for our league. Please visit our "Sponsors" page to see the local companies and families that have donated to our league!
Q. What equipment to buy?
A. All softball players need a softball glove and a batting helmet with faceguard (required by ASA rule). Cleats (softball shoes) are required in ages 8U and older. There are league bats to share, so she does not need her own bat. As a general glove-buying guideline, glove size 9-10 inches is for 6U & 8U, and size 10-11 inches for older divisions (10U-12U). Be sure it fits well; she will not have fun if she cannot properly control her glove.
Q. Does the league need donations or extra support?
A. YES! We are always trying to fund important projects to expand the softball experience for your daughters, improve our facilities, and improve the level of play in our league. Please visit our website (click on "Support Us") for ways to support our league and get involved.
